Although it may seem that eye glasses don’t hold a candle to contact lenses; that is not true. There are many reasons in which eye glasses are needed. In fact, the contact lens wearer should have a pair on hand because they never know when something is going to happen that they must fall back on their glasses in order to see. Here are some advantages of eye glasses:

- Some people simply do not have an interest in contacts because they aren’t very excited about putting their finger in their eye. They may not be able to do this like some do and prefer to stay with their glasses.

- Allergies can play a big role in whether or not someone can wear contacts. Many with allergies are unable to wear them and, of course, glasses do not have an influence on allergies.

- Glasses offer eye protection in work environments in which debris and fumes may be an issue. Any time that a person is in a hazardous environment that needs eye protection, glasses come in handy.

- Some contact lens wearers get eye infections, may lose, or run out of contacts, so their glasses are always there to save the day.

So as you can see, both have their advantages over the other. Contacts are not fool proof, but they are nice to have. Then again, the glasses are there to save the day if something goes wrong with the contacts. The debate may continue with some, but it is obvious to see that they can work hand-in-hand.

The most important development in glass music came when, in 1761, young Benjamin Franklin heard a recital by glass virtuoso Edmund Delaval. Franklin was so impressed by the instrument that he looked for a way to improve it. As he wrote to his friend, Giovanni Battista Beccaria, in Italy:

“Being charmed by the sweetness of its tones, and the music he produced from it, I wished only to see the glasses disposed in a more convenient form, and brought together in a narrower compass, so as to admit a greater number of tones, and all within reach of hand to a person sitting before the instrument (…)”

Franklin chose 24 glass bowls, had them tuned by grinding, and mounted them concentrically on a horizontal rod. Driven by a treadle (very much like an old-fashioned sewing machine), the glasses spun around, and the player had only to touch the glasses with wet fingers.

Franklin called the instrument the “armonica”, “in honor of your (i.e. the Italian) musical language”.

Many of us know for a fact that ultraviolet radiation can have adverse effects on our eyes if we go out into the sun without adequate protection. That’s why having a pair of sunglasses on hand is a must during bright days, especially in summer. What many people do not realize, though, is that these same ultraviolet rays can also have negative health benefits on their pets, specifically dogs. This is why getting dog sunglasses for them is not as ridiculous an idea as it may first sound.

Companies such as Doggles, seeFIDO, and Dog-Goes, acknowledge the fact that many pet owners value all aspects of their dogs’ well-being, including their eyesight. This is why they have developed dog sunglasses that come in many different sizes, shapes, and designs to accommodate the many different dog breeds out there. They stem not from fashion or leisure roots, but from the very real fact that the eyes of dogs need to be protected from harmful rays of the light spectrum, as well as from irritants like dust, sand, and wind.

Source: eyeglasses, tiffany sale, christmas 2008Some veterinarians are skeptical about the necessity of sunglasses for dogs while others endorse the idea wholeheartedly. Dog goggles are especially useful if the animal is already suffering from an eye infection; to help him recover, his eyes need to be kept free of foreign objects, no matter how small. Dogs that are constantly outdoors stand to benefit from this accessory as well, since ultraviolet rays can cause a condition known as pannus or keratitis superficialis chronica, which affects the cornea. This condition cannot be cured completely; all that can be done is to prevent further eye deterioration through medications and proper eye care.

Many pet owners like to take their dogs along while traveling. We see them with their pets in convertibles with the top down, in motorcycle sidecars, and in the back of pickup trucks. Getting dogs to wear sunglasses during such trips is a good idea, to protect their eyes from possible injury from debris and the wind. Many high-quality sunglasses for dogs have polycarbonate or plastic ceramic lenses, which have a reputation for being shatterproof. And since they are goggles, they fit snugly over the face, leaving no space for wind to get through. However, many brands carry dog goggles that have vents in the frame to ensure that the lenses do not fog up and obscure the dog’s vision.

It can be a bit tricky getting dogs used to wearing sunglasses, but all that is needed is patience and enthusiasm to train the dog not to try and remove them. This usually happens when the dog gets distracted by something else and forgets that he’s wearing dog sunglasses in the first place. Once he has accepted them and makes no objections to wearing them, the owner can start taking comfort in the fact that his or her four-legged friend’s eyes will be taken care of, and that he’ll look a lot cuter, too!

In the history of Warner Bros. cartoon characters on glass, two thing are clear:
1) The Pepsi / W.B. promotions of the 70’s were hugely successful, and resulted in the distribution of vast numbers of glasses.
2) The earliest promotions featuring W.B. characters in the 30’s were apparently of such small production that those glasses are among the rarest and most sought after today.

Why is that? The answer is that the cartoon characters from Warner Bros, who had become extremely popular by the 70’s, were virtual unknowns forty years earlier or were yet to be created. The cartoon world of the 1930’s was dominated by Walt Disney. It was with Disney’s characters who blazed the trail of cartoon characters on promotional glassware. Since his films were the ones most widely seen and admired at that time, his characters would have been the ones with the most promotional value. And what a win-win situation those glasses must have been for Disney! Food processors were paying licensing fees to use his characters on thousands of glasses containing their products, and in doing so were greatly increasing the visibility and value of those characters.
Enter Leon Schlesinger. Leon was a small-time money man, business friend of the Warners, and owner of the studio that made their cartoons. He had only entered into the cartoon production business because he knew he could rely on the Warner brothers to distribute his cartoon output, assuring him of making a buck. Using his studio’s characters on promotional glassware, just like Disney’s, was too good an idea to have escaped his attention. But while several of Disney’s characters were already well known by 1936, the first film starring Porky Pig, who would develop into the Schlesinger studio’s first major character, had just been released.
So exactly what was done next? Unfortunately, we can not say with certainty. There is no mention of these glasses in any of the many books about the Warner Bros. studio, including those authored by Warner Bros. employees. The good news is that enough other information can be gathered to establish a pretty definite timeline and likely course of events. Researching the studio’s film output and the history of each character has enabled us to date the glasses. Studying the physical details of glasses found so far has enabled us to confirm that more than one series of glasses exists.

THE CHARACTERS:
Just like their live-action counterparts, a cartoon character may make an appearance in one film, then never be seen again. If we were to find an undated promotion featuring that character today and knew the year the film was released, we would know the year of that promotion. So it goes for the glass featuring Patrick Parrot. He appeared in one cartoon, after which the studio gave up on him and never used him again. The film, and so likely the glass, is from 1937.
But what if the character became a star, and went on to appear in many films? Well, just as we can pretty accurately date an old photo of a live action star by his appearance, we can roughly pin down the years of the glasses featuring Porky Pig and Daffy Duck. Cartoon characters may not get old, but they do something even better. They evolve. Their appearance, especially in their early years, is refined and altered by their creators as time goes by. The Daffy Duck on that early glass is the way he appeared about 1938.
Also, on some of the glasses, the characters are shown in a scene from a specific cartoon. For example, there are several different glasses that picture Porky and/or Petunia dressed as bride and groom, just as they appeared in the film ÒPorky’s RomanceÓ, released in 1937. In addition to the characters and the films, another big clue as to the year of issue is the L.S.C. copyright. Some glasses have it, some don’t. The letters stand for ÒLeon Schlesinger CorporationÓ, the name under which Leon Schlesinger Productions established a licensing division in September 1937. Glasses with that mark would have to have been issued after that time.

Eyeglass frames are commonly made from metal or plastic. Lenses were originally made from glass, but many are now made from various types of plastic, including CR-39 and polycarbonate. These materials reduce the danger of breakage and weigh less than glass lenses. Some plastics also have more advantageous optical properties than glass, such as better transmission of visible light and greater absorption of ultraviolet light.[1] Some plastics have a greater index of refraction than most types of glass; this is useful in the making of corrective lenses shaped to correct various vision abnormalities such as myopia, allowing thinner lenses for a given prescription. Newer plastic lenses, called izon, can also correct for the higher order aberrations that naturally occur in the surface of our eye. These lenses create sharper vision and help with the halos, starbursts, and comet-tails often associated with night time driving glare. Wavefront guided LASIK surgery also corrects for the higher order aberrations.

Scratch-resistant coatings can be applied to most plastic eyeglasses lenses giving them similar scratch resistance to glass. Hydrophobic coatings designed to ease cleaning are also available, as are anti-reflective coatings intended to reduce glare, improve night vision and make the wearer’s eyes more visible.[2]

CR-39 lenses are the most common plastic lenses due to their low weight, high scratch resistance, and low transparency for ultra violet and infrared radiation. Polycarbonate and Trivex lenses are the lightest and most shatter-resistant, making them the best for impact protection,[1] yet offer poor optics due to high dispersion, and having a low Abbe number of 31.
